What Is Reflexology? A Beginner's Guide

If you have ever wondered what reflexology is, or what actually happens in a session, you are in very good company. It is one of the most popular holistic therapies in Ireland, and one of the friendliest places to start if you are new to all this.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a hands-on therapy where a practitioner applies gentle, focused pressure to the feet, and sometimes the hands or ears. It is based on a traditional belief that these areas connect to different parts of the body. Reflexology is a complementary therapy, not a medical treatment.

What happens in a session?

You will usually sit or lie back comfortably, fully clothed apart from your shoes and socks. Your practitioner will have a quick chat with you about what you are looking for, then work through your feet using steady, rhythmic pressure. Many sessions last around an hour, and plenty of people simply enjoy the quiet time to themselves.

Does reflexology hurt?

Most people find it comfortable, and you are always in charge. Some spots can feel a little tender. If anything feels too much, just say so and your practitioner will adjust their pressure.

Before your first visit

  • Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to relax in.

  • Let your practitioner know about any health conditions, pregnancy or medication.

  • Have a light snack beforehand rather than a big meal.

  • Ask about their training, professional memberships and insurance.

  • Come with questions. A good practitioner will be glad to answer them.

Different styles of reflexology

Not all reflexologists offer the same thing. You might come across foot reflexology, hot stone foot reflexology, ear and face reflexology, or reflexology designed for pregnancy, babies and children. If something catches your eye, ask the practitioner about it before you book.

Find a reflexologist near you

Ireland has wonderful reflexologists in every corner of the country. In the Holistic Ireland directory you can search by therapy, county or location, then visit a practitioner's website to get in touch or book directly.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a reflexology session?

Most sessions last around an hour, though this varies, so check with your practitioner when you book.

Do I need to undress?

No. You stay fully clothed, apart from taking off your shoes and socks.

Is reflexology suitable during pregnancy?

Many practitioners offer reflexology designed for pregnancy. Always tell your practitioner you are pregnant, and check with your midwife or GP first.

How often should I book?

That is entirely up to you. Many people try one session first, then chat with their practitioner about what suits them.

Is reflexology a replacement for medical care?

No. It is a complementary therapy. Always speak with your GP or healthcare professional about medical concerns.
